On Wednesday NEMO, our adopted and bottle raised black as the night tom cat never returned from his day tour around the farm. We were worried but also quite consumed by other things and anyway, what were we supposed to do? We just waited until dawn but there wasn't any sign of him either despite our tongue clicking, whistling and calling.
On Thursday he didn't show up all day and on Friday neither. I took my wellies and walked the farm and the road searching for him. Unsuccessfully.
Friday night I was furious with ther person that snatched him and swore to prick the tyres of the car that ran him over. I was almost giving up hope when I heard a faint cry outside the front door.
When opened a rather miserable creature crept past me. NEMO was all scratched, tousled, limping heavily and visibly sore. He sat crouched down and motionless after nibbling some crackers and seemed to have trouble to even just lie down because of the pain each movement seemed to cause.
I gave him some rescue remedy and arnica globuli and made him lie down eventually, what he did reluctantly at first but in the end gratefully too.

Now I am torn between respecting the integrity of this tom cat of ours and a protective instinct resp. a rather selfish motivation.
Almost eight months after having been found on a straw bale unable to walk by himself not only his body, but especially his balls have reached a remarkable size probably producing a reasonable amount of substances responsible for a good shot of masculinity. In order to keep our farm cats from breeding like rabbits we tended to vote for castration anyway. But is it fair to give him the snips in order to keep him from acting out his natural desires? Even if that means rescuing him from getting into fights and thus getting as heavily injured as he obviously is now? An operation to make sure he always safely returns home to us? A decision with irreversible consequences he doesn't even get the chance to influence?

We denied evolution when we saved his life and we will deny evolution stopping him from spreading his genes. Does that mean the equilibrium is being restored?
