Preparing myself for a job interview someone advised me to acquire some blouses instead of the men's shirts I usually wear because apparently when looking at female applicant's photographs potential employers pay particular attention to the right-hand button-facing. Things like that really wind me up. Why on earth did the skirt revolution not include the totally overjudged button-facing subject too? Same for the fly. Why is there a difference in the first place and why is complying to this rather old fashioned and by the way absurd rule pre-conditional for getting a job. How dare we judge other cultures gender-related dress codes (like the veil) and at the same time hold on to such a stupid dogma.
Having given up on the button-facing matter and having convinced myself that dressing up for a job is not exactly the same as breaking up with my punk ideals I went into quite a number of shops to glance at what they have on offer. Scanning the horrendous prices they charge you as well as the horrific models they display I eventually found few exemplaries I'd liked to try on and one particular piece which made it to the top of my list. I ended up looking very fashionable and snobby indeed wearing that dirty white blouse sized XL.
I know I am not a slim person from examining my reflection daily. But what do they think classifying my healthy build into Xtra Large?? Instead of downgrading sizes M, L and the particularly XL couldn't they create some new sizes in order to serve the rather starved-looking target group of today's shopping malls? What about some Xtra Xtra Small or a new line like Gaunt, Xtra Gaunt and so on (as "small" doesn't really apply and lank, lean, skinny and slim don't work out because of the first letter) with an A for anorexic at the very bottom of the list?
I'll always remember the day I was thrown from an S-sized men's shirt into an XL ladies blouse! But besides the labels and buttons I look smart. You should see me!
